Dear Parents:

Writing is one of the most important skills for academic success. A good foundation will help your child succeed in today's academically competitive environment, Teens-Helping-Kids Club*, a high school student volunteer group, will offer a one-of-a-kind interactive online creative writing workshop for interested 6th graders at Oak Hill Elementary School. No driving. No waiting. We deliver our instructional services directly to your home through the Internet so that your child can learn in the comfort of the home. In addition, this workshop will expose students to a paperless e-classroom, net meetings, online collaboration/teaming, etc., much of which they would not encounter in a normal curriculum until high school or beyond.

What is covered?

Your child will learn basic writing techniques such as imagery, internal dialogue, similes, metaphors, flashback, personification, parallel structure, as well as advanced techniques such as symbolism and word choice. In addition, your child will learn how to begin a story, how to expand the climax, and how to end a story. During the workshop, we will teach 12 tricks of the trade and discuss how to interpret a writing theme – a critical thinking skill essential to academic success. To help your child create vivid expressions in their compositions, this workshop also covers common idioms, proverbs and similes.

How it works:

This is an online writing workshop – a telephone and a computer with Internet connection are required. Each student needs to submit one piece of original work every two weeks, in addition to biweekly reading assignments and group lessons. Reading assignments include selected sample stories and writing techniques. Students will share their writing with a group of fellow students and learn to appreciate and evaluate others' work. The instructors will review, edit and comment on each student's writing in detail. Students are required to revise their compositions before they submit them to their peer review groups. At the conclusion of this workshop, all students who complete all writing assignments will receive a certificate of completion.

Lead instructors:

Ellen Huang and Lily Hsiang, both seniors at Thomas Jefferson High School of Science and Technology*. They are passionate about literature and are dedicated to helping kids become better writers. Your child will interact with other creative minds in his/her grade level and receive individualized attention from our instructors.

How to register:

To register for this workshop, please send your child's name, address, phone number, and teacher's name and a tuition check no later than 9/29/08 (postmark date) to:
